of Landscape Architecture —
David A. Williston
David A. Williston, one of the
most prolific African American Landscape Architects, earned his
degree from Cornell in 1898. He was among the first African Americans
to graduate from Cornell. He later taught at State Colleges of
North Carolina, Missouri, Tuskegee Institute, Fisk University
and Tennessee State A & L. He was a major LA consultant to
Negro Land Grant Institutions between 1900 - 1930. Williston opened
his office of practice in 1934. For 32 years he was the only Negro
teaching horticulture and rudiments of site planning. His work
ranged from the US's first federal housing project to Booker T.
Washington's home.
