With a partner who is a planner, we recently
launched a new firm; "Elan Planning & Design, Inc.",
located in Saratoga Springs, New York. At present, our genre of
work delves deeply into community visioning and revitalization,
economic development, innovative "non-traditional" home
subdivisions, and campus planning with a focus in sports facility
design. Geographically and economically, upstate New York has been
good for us as an emerging firm. While a majority of our projects
are close to our world headquarters, our projects extend into New
England, Florida, Minnesota and that always "difficult"
site on the French Riviera. We recently guest lectured at the Rhode
Island School of Design on the topic of Elan's approach to subdivision
design in conservation based contextualism.

Nine years of dragon boating has taken me to two world championships
representing Canada. Aiming for a third. In my other life, Toronto
office TALES of the EARTH designs gardens for meditation and healing.
Work is inspired by continuing research and travels to designed
sacred landscapes. It was my MLA thesis that got me started. See

President of the Maine Section of the BSLA/ASLA and belong to the
Board of Directors of Architalx, an annual lecture series that aims
to educate and inspire the Portland Community in the fields of architecture,
landscape architecture and design. I also volunteer for Portland
Trails, a local land trust building trails, My husband and I are
also endlessly renovating an 1895 farmhouse in the heart of Portland.

I just wanted to touch base, share
a recent accomplishment. Our firm, Wetland Research Associates,
Inc., recently received an ASLA merit award for a wetland mitigation
project that I designed. I have been practicing for the past four
years with an environmental consulting firm specializing in wetland
and stream mitigation / restoration. We have designed several dozen
wetland and stream creation projects. We specialize in the hydrologic
design and native plant establishment techniques.

Has rejoined Jacobs / Ryan Associates
after a brief hiatus following the receipt of a Master’s of
Science in Historic Preservation. Her recent degree and previous
experience make her ideally suited to work with projects containing
complex historic landscapes and other cultural resources. In December
2001 she completed her thesis entitled “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?
Historic Preservation and the Environmental Movement”. In
the process of writing her thesis she had the opportunity to explore
the overlapping fields of green design and historic preservation.
Kirsten is excited about the possibilities inherent in combining
careful management of cultural and environmental resources with
good landscape design.

Hello! I’m back in NY! After 6 years in San Francisco. It
was wonderful and now I’m glad to be home. I worked for David
Thorne – an invaluable mentor and friend to me. Now –
relaxing a bit before I head back to work. To aid my transition,
I am taking Sept. and Oct. to travel in Europe, to see gardens and
offices and what’s going on in the world. Volunteering at
Stourhead for a week, London, Paris, Garden Festival at Chaumont,
then intensive Spanish lessons in Barcelona for a month. I hope
to be back to work by 2004! E-mail me at ebp1@cornell.edu.
