Aire d'essai is born. This summer 2004, three associates started
their own design firm: Alexandre Champagne MLA 02', Xavier
Champagne-Deuve MLA 01', and Bianca Marvin, a Graphic Designer
from the Ecoles des Arts Graphiques, Paris, France. Aires
d'essai has established two offices, one in Paris, France,
and one in Los Angeles. Our French office plans on undertaking
public and institutional projects, while our US office plans
on being involved with high-end residential design. Because
Aire d'essai is a multidisciplinary design practice, we have
expanded our scope of projects to offering graphic design
services to design firms. Our portfolio already includes our
collaboration on the illustrations for the project of a new
harbor in Fort-de-France, French Antilles, in partnership
with Agence TER, and independently, the design for two private
residences, in the Los Angeles area. Our graphic design portfolio
includes web site development projects for two Parisian landscape
architecture firms.

I taught a seminar called Red, Green, Blue (landscape-architectural
aesthetics) at Adelaide University (School of Architecture,
Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning), Australia this
past March-April. I then presented a keynote address to the
IFLA regional conference in Prague (in May). The latter song
and dance was entitled "The Given, The Taken, and The
Given-Back".

After many address changes and a hiatus from communication
with the department, I happened to be in Ithaca this past
alumni weekend. I called Peter Trowbridge to stop by and say
hello, only to find an alumni party and smorgasbord in full
swing. The next morning Becky and I met Dan Krall at the plantations
and many more friendly students. Since my first visit to Cornell
when I was considering attending the program, I have always
appreciated the outgoing nature of many of the faculty; in
fact, it was a major factor in my participation in the program.
Thank you for organizing a successful alumni weekend.
Here's an update of some of my professional activities:
I have worked as a Land Use Training Specialist for the New
York State Department of State in the Division of Local Government
since 2000. There are over 1600 local governments in New York
and many of them rely on volunteers to accomplish important
functions, such as serving on the planning board or zoning
board and reviewing projects and developing local laws. Our
land use training team serves the people of the state by delivering
training programs, predominantly through county or regionally
sponsored events.
For a listing of courses offered by the Division, please visit
http://www.dos.state.ny.us/lgss/index.htm.
From 2000-2002 I trained local governments regularly. For
the past two years I have worked in the Watershed Office (New
York City Watershed) in Margaretville where I assist local
communities who are partners in the Watershed Agreement, which
is a most interesting experiment in balancing environmental
protection with economic viability. I also develop curriculums
for training courses, and my education in Landscape Architecture
has served well in the creation of courses on Community Design
Guidelines and Smart Growth! Quality Communities. I take great
satisfaction in being able to assist people who not only volunteer
for their communities, but often have regular jobs with taxable
income that pays civil servants like myself.

I am currently in my second year of a PhD in Landscape Architecture
at Cal. My research focuses on the interface between design
and people's activities in establishing a sense of place.
I am particularly interested in suburban landscapes and my
case study is the City of Irvine in Southem California.
I have recently presented a paper at the "Community Participation
in the Pacific Rim" conference where I have summarized
a project I have been working on for the past three semesters,
a masterplan for the small coastal community of Westport,
located in Mendocino County, California.
I am teaching an introductory course in Environmental Design
and have been teaching an Intro to Landscape Architecture
in the Spring of 2004. Together with four faculty, I am organ!zing
a conference for March of 2005, "The Future of the Metropolitan
Landscape." Roger Trancik will be keynote speaker for
a panel on wasted landscapes, and Irene Curulli will be giving
a talk on reclaimed landscapes.

Last Fall, I started working at the University of New Hampshire
in their Office of Sustainability Programs -- so in a way
I am back at school. I am immersed in all things sustainable
here including my passion for rock climbing. Soon I hope to
apply this knowledge in the field of landscape architecture
(where I have been working the past eight years).
